Our School which has served the society for 70 long years and has seen her Diamond Jubilee owes its origin to Shri Ramnath Goenkaji, a well known and prominent businessman and the Chairman of the Express Group of papers. The School came into existence on 04-07-1949 with his munificent and magnanimous contributions. It has been named after his beloved wife Smt. Moongibai Goenka to Commemorate her name and to honour her laudable services to the Community.The initial number of students of the school stood at 75 with five staff members. The school was housed in then No.1, and now Old 11/New 1, Ramanujar Street, Sowcarpet, Chennai – 79. which had been the residence of the Goenka family. The main aim of the founder in starting the School has been to cater to the educational needs of the girls in the crowded and populous area and to give them instructions on sound lines so as to train them for a good life. It was functioning under the management of the Moongibai Goenka Educational Trust and with its aid.
We have two media of instruction, namely, Tamil and English to cater to the needs of the girls of the locality. The School is popular in the area having earned public support for its high academic standards and discipline. It is considered a privilege to get admitted into this institution.The School which is managed by a Committee, had its first Secretary late Smt. R.S. Anusuya Bai, who continued to hold the office for long years and strove to maintain the high standards. In 1963 a new building was constructed and it was possible to house 18 sections. The first batch of girls for the S.S.L.C. Public Examination, was presented in 1952 and the students performed creditably. The school has been maintaining steady progress all these years.
Situated in the heart of the city, the school has been catering to the needs of the children belonging to different strata of society and promoting national integration. The school has been upgraded as a Higher Secondary School from June 1980. Now the school has a total strength of about 612 from standards VI to XII.Accommodation had been increased during 1989-90 by putting up new building at a cost of Rs.2,54,036/- by the management.
Thus the infrastructure of the school was strengthened every year. The School gradually expanded its Scope and useful service and additional had to be put up to cope with the growing needs of the Institution, the old building was renovated. This was made possible by the very liberal help rendered by the illustrious founder from time to time.On 11-3-1985 the Moongibai Goenka Educational Trust was dissolved. The management of the school was taken over by Bhagwandas Goenka Educational Institution since March 1985, a company established and registered under Companies Act 1956. On 14.3.1985, the Board of Directors of Bhagwandas Goenka Educational Institution at their meeting resolved to take over the Trust including this school for girls for its better maintenance and for converting or enlarging the same into a college for higher education.Our School has become an Examination centre for standard X from March 1984 and for Std. XII from March 1987.
During 1988-89 a new Group with Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology (English medium) under Academic Stream and Accountancy and Auditing (English medium) under Vocational stream had been introduced. During 1989-90 a new Group Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Computer Science (English medium) has been introduced. Science articles costing Rs.1,23,027/- and Computer Equipment and furniture costing Rs.1,99,870/- have been fixed in classrooms at a cost of Rs.34,400/- Another group in Hr. Sec., with Business Maths, Commerce, Accountancy and Comp. Science has been started from the year 2000. During 2000-2001, 4 computers were added to the school at a cost of Rs.1.35 lakhs through liberal contribution by Smt. Saroj Goenka, the chairperson. During 2001-2002, 2 computers were added at a cost of Rs.21,700/- During 2002-2003, Three Computers were additionally purchased at the cost of Rs.93,360/-. During 2007-2008 16 computers were added at the cost of Rs.5 Lakhs. During 2014-2015 LED Monitors were fixed in the place of CRT Monitors at the cost of Rs,94,500/- During 2016-17 Smart Board introduced for the students. Further, interactive Board was purchased for 2.4 lakhs in 2017-18.
It is a matter for sincere gratitude that the noble minded founder Shri Ramnath Goenkaji and the members of his illustrious family continue to take a vibrant interest in the progress and development of the school which in a true sense is the outcome of their noble impulse and magnificent patronage. Smt. Saroj Goenka, Chairperson of the Moongibai Goenka Girls’ Higher Secondary School committee and a member of Bhagwandas Goenka Educational Institution, which manages the school, deserves special mention in this regard. Thanks to the consistent and continued support of the Founder and his family and the devoted work of the Staff of the School it has earned for itself a name for a high degree of proficiency in academic achievements.
